A word about the trip to TGU
The trip to Tegucigalpa from Antigua is a grueling 15 hour bus ride. The service on the particular line that Juan (my colleague from Escudo de Fe) and I took was substandard even by Central American norms, at least for "pullman service" (not "chicken bus service"). Food was mediocre and skimpy, service minimal, we had to stand in line over an hour at the terminal in TGU, even though we already had tickets. Next time, I'm flying....
Another thing I noticed is that there are few straight stretches of highway down that way, and the roads are not good in many places. This adds to the discomfort on the trip.
Although the buses have restrooms, you are instructed to use them "only for urination".
I saw a blatant example of racism on the bus trip back from TGU. We were stopped at the border for a routine police check. The officer walked up and down the aisle of the bus looking at the travelers. The only person on that bus that looked like a Mayan was Juan. . Guess who the policeman singled out to take off the bus? Only because he looked like an indigenous person....
Anyway, nothing really became of the incident, since the officer let Juan get right back on the bus. I was surprised at how Juan reacted...he just took it in stride.
